I enjoyed this program immensely and learned more than anticipated. I thought it would be about DEI and the basics, which I need to be a better support person to my company’s efforts. But, I learned the WHY, which drives the WHAT. I learned why gaining leadership buy-in is crucial to DEIA efforts success, and why tactics can derail the journey to success.
I know how to lead from a business and strategic standpoint, but had never understood the importance of focusing on change management during the process. That was a shift in my thinking. I also was able to do a deep dive into how leading people, with a focus on the emotional side of change. This was a big mind shift for me and I notice the difference in how I explain what we’re doing and the WHY. They drilled in the WHY, which wasn’t how we introduced our DEIA efforts.
I learned so much that I didn’t know before and I’ve been a DEI Manager for a couple of years. The historical foundation helped me understand why people’s beliefs are so ingrained. With that knowledge I can better meet people where they are, which will help me to reach their hearts and minds.
Being a certified EDIS has given me the knowledge and confidence to seek career opportunities that have a specialized focus on diversity, equity and inclusion. I’ve been volunteering with my company, but we were never given the foundation we needed, it was just handed to our committee to develop from scratch. This program helped us with strategic planning and the need to focus on equity. And we received a lot of practical ways to apply what we learned.
